This is because "subform" is no longer in the Forms collection, but the "mainform" is.

You can change the SQL to use
[Forms]![mainform_name]![subform_control]!maincategorycombobox].

I would do just what I did in the example, except...

I would do just what I did in the example, except you could put it in a public function, and then just pass a query string to it, and return a boolean. Like:

Public Function fCheck(sSQL As String)...
