It's just a guess, but might it not be a good idea to move the contentType all the way up, as the first line in the JSP file? Makes more sense to me.

No, that is not possible. Java is executed on the server, before any (client side) Javascript will take place. Server side Javascript might be a different story, but I guess that's not the Javascript...

You can do a request.getParameterNames(), which will return an enumeration of Strings. With these names, you can retreive the values of the parameters.
