Keep waiting.... sometimes you may need to wait quite a bit for the Android emulator to start the first time. Depending on your system speed, it may take up to 10 minutes to start the emulator.

After reading through pg 71 and 72, I still don't understand what is a "category" and why it's useful to set or define in the manifest.
