To use HTTPS you need to install SSL on your IIS machine and also load a digital certificate to authenticate yourself and a certificate can be obtained from various places on the net, VeriSign for example sells them. Certs arent cheap though so be aware of that.

This may help you:

You can also create your own certificate for free on Windows servers.

Yes, you can set your own domain controller up as a Certificate Authority (CA), however, unless you are a well known company (Dell, Microsoft, HP, etc) your consumers might have a hard time dealing with the fact that you are essentially signing your own credientials void of a third party instutition.

You can use SelfSSL to simulate SSL certs on an IIS development environment.

I don't think most of the people that go to my secure sites even know who Verisign is. Isn't the encryption exactly the same whether you do your own or buy one for $2,500?

Yes. Also I agree 100% with you that there is probably a percentage of online shoppers that don't know who Verisign is, but with all of the phising and such going on Consumers are extra learly, IMHO anyway.

I think you make a good point... and so do I ;)

My biggest concern is that the site is in fact... safe. A lot of the work I do is for company Extranet sites that need to be secure.
