Learning straight off the net from a site you are not used to can be tricky. Alot of people I think will write a tutorial quickly, using short cut methods they are used to and dont explain everything that is happening. What I did because of this is invest in the beginning php5 book so I always have a well written reference next to my computer and if there is something not in the book I want I just search for it specifically across all sites.
