You may want to do this 99 out of 100 times, but not everyone else does.

If you use the normal reply to topic feature (rather than the quick reply), there is a checkbox to allow you to subscribe to the topic.

The quick reply is a stripped down version that lacks all of the features of the normal reply page so that is, well, quick.
