Thanks Alan, your answer had me stumped and sent me searching. Discovered that my free C++ compiler uses deprecated elements.
So my Wrox book published in 2005 is telling me how to use code and software which was out of date about 5 years ago.
Anyway I've got things working now. The search revealed that I had to create a couple of cfg files in the bin directory.
