Default Absolute Newby

Hello all,

I need some serious help. I am in the process of seeking to reeducate myself to become a programmer. I have already delved into html and css. So that is pretty much taken care of (and isn't really programming).

Here is where I need the help. I need some good resources for programming theory (I am an absolute newby). Most of those I know say to learn php. But, I still need to nail down the basics of programming theory.

So any suggestions on beginners books/tutorials etc? I want to start from ground zero and work up to learning multiple languages, but where do I start? There are a lot of books out there and a lot of tutorials, but it doesn't mean they are all proper, current, or of overall good professional practice.

Any links to (books preferably) or online tutorials is appreciated.

Thanks.
