Default using vim or any other editor

I've been following the Beginning Red Hat 9 Linux book. I'm totally new to Linux I've been trying to save and exit the editor after working in it. I don't see a way to save my work after working in Vim. It looks like I need to press esc then ':q and enter'. But I keep getting a message "E37: No write since last change (add ! to override)". I've tried to interpret that the best I could but with no luck, am I missing something really simple here? I was trying to write a crontab file. can anyone help me?
