Default Excerpts for Books are Horrible

What's up with excerpts for the technical books. They are horrible. All they have are intros about the author's life and hobbies. There is an excerpt of index as if someone ever buys a book based on it's index. Before I buy a book, I would like to browse into the book a little deeper and not just the first chapter. This is not a novel book store. I'm not going to get sucked into buying the book based on the gripping knowledge that the author likes jello. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea. I want to see the authors style/topic knowledge/madness to his methods. I don't want to buy a book base on his dedication to his wife/parents for getting him to where he is, though he is entitle to that...but I, as a consumer don't really care.
