Default why Visual FoxPro ?

Whats the history behind Visual FoxPro? With all the VB and
C++ etc development environments and Access/SQL databases;
why did MS pursue FoxPro ?

Can anyone point me towards historical info?

I am about to take on some legacy FoxPro work.
Personally I think it would be best to upgrade to vb.net etc rather
thanb go down the route of revamping Foxpro stuff.

TIA
