Another note:

It would be useful if we could actually write "[code]" and it's corresponding close tag in our messages without them being interpreted as forum code delimiters.

Perhaps the simplest way to allow this is to add a new forum code rule -- [[] is the forum code for the '[' character, so messages that contain examples of correct forum code usage will look like this:

[[]code]
bla bla bla
[[]/code]
