Default Corrupted cookies?

I had an unusual experience this weekend - I'm a bit concerned that it happened, and I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything like this on this forum. If not, then consider this a heads up if anything like this should happen to you.

Over the weekend I lost the ability to log in. The symptom was that all of a sudden I found myself not (automatically) logged into the forum when I connected. The Member Login section on the left of the forum pages showed that I wasn't logged in, and I could not view any profiles nor post anything.

I entered my username and password at the prompt and the forum displayed the sucessful login page, but when it then returned to the main forum page it still indicated that I wasn't logged in, and still wouldn't accept posts nor profile views.

No matter how many times I went through this exercise, the same thing happened - my login looked like it was accepted, but it really wasn't.

I first thought that the forum was broken, but then noticed that someone had posted a new message while I was trying to get in. This made me think it was something about my system, but to the best of my knowledge I hadn't changed anything and I didn't recall any unusual events occurring.

I deleted cookies on my system and found that I could subsequently log in and now all appears well.

I don't know what happened, but obviously something happened to the P2P forum cookies on my system - they got messed up somehow - either I did it or the forum software did it or gremlins did it.
