Default xcode for "learning"

I wish to return to programming and I'm on a Mac. I have basic C++ knowledge and have used borland 4.5 C++ for windows in past. I'm curious to know if I can use the xcode developer tools as a "learning" environment or if there are too many advanced requirements that render it not beginner friendly. My point is if I'm learning say function syntax and not ready to build a full blown application, is xcode suitable or should I go with something more beginnerish to learn from. I've loaded the xcode tools and it appears quite overwhelming to a newbie.

thanks for any help.
