Removing the forum code is a problem.

Simply stripping out the codes themselves is not so hard (and I already gave it a try). Unfortunately when someone uses forum code, it's usually wrapped around some meaningful text that was meant to be formatted in a particular way. Removing the forum code actually makes it harder to read since you can't tell, for example, that someone was quoting another member in a reply (it all gets jumbled together).

I realize this was not a problem before since there was no ability to format the look of your postings and replies. We have this capability now (which is a good thing), so we just need to figure out how to best use it.

As an alternative (stay with me here...):

I'm looking into the possibility of enabling HTML emails. In your profile you could select the option of text-only, or full HTML messages that would match the formatting and content of the web interface. We realize that not everyone wants HTML messages so you could choose your preference. We would probably default to multi-part MIME containing the text and HTML version to allow the member's email client to display as they desire.

No promises yet on how long (or how hard!) this will be... Just an idea.
