Your solution sounds like a fair one- as long as the HTML messages don't get busy. Meaning, I don't want to see the wrox logo and other materials in the message- just the message with HTML formatting for the posts themselves. I am sure an XSLT could be made to do the transformation without too much difficulty (if it's not already supported).
