Ok, this might be a stupid question, but given that you need to register with the site and then subscribe to a topic in order to receive email notification how likely is is that a spammer would be replying to a list-mail anyway? Perhaps a requirement that new topics can only be started from the web would do as a halfway house for the moment, with a simple FROM: and RE: check for email replies? The chances that a members name could be randomly spoofed, along with a sensible subject line must be pretty small.
