Either I don't understand the request, or.. well I guess I don't understand it.

If you want to track specific threads at the "forum" level view, that means a whole new tracking system needs to be built. You can "subscribe" to threads (like email- but not email) and then get notified on that main page.

Truthfully, I think your talking about way too much work for a small benefit. I'd say subscribe to the threads your interested in and use rules to properly sort the messages (or group them, if you use bloomba).
