I have a main form frmHousehold and a subform frmApplicants.
In my tblApplicants I set AppDate field required to yes. I also want the form to open blank, which it does.
I don't have a default value in the subform, but when I close it without entering any record:

1. Access assigned an ID and saves it as a record
2. I get a message saying, "AppDate is a required field…"


I would appreciate, if you e-mail me with an idea!

In design view for your table, check to see if there is a "Yes" under required on the general tab.

Do you have your form set-up as "Data entry" under properties?

One possible explanation: Your table may not assign default values, but in your form's "On Open", "On Current", or "On Activate" event you have code that is assigning a value to a field as soon as the form opens and activates. When that happens Access will create a record for it, even if the field it initialized may be invisible on the form. Make sure this code is eliminated. The best way to assign (uncalculated) default values without actually creating a record at start-up is to put a default value in the table.
