The guy who coined the term wrote an article describing it here:

That's a good first read.

A couple of Wrox authors working on related upcoming books have some occasional comments about it here:
Nicholas C. Zakas - he writes mostly about "standard" Ajax using all open-source and standard languages:

and
Wally McClure - he's writing more about the Microsoft ASP.NET "Atlas" add-in that adds Ajax to ASP.NET:
http://weblogs.asp.net/wallym/

Any of these would be good sources to start learning with.
