I'm looking into creating a custom DataGrid control. Any helpful tips or advice?

if you mean 'customize a datagrid', you can read [ASP.NET Data Web Controls Kick Start] book, By Scott Mitchell;
if you mean 'build a control', you can read [Building ASP.NET Server Controls] book, by Rob Cameron and Dale Michalk.
