how to update a database when asp.net session ends

i am working with an application in which users can login. once the user has logged in the status (boolean) is set to 1 indicating the user is online. But a user may close the application window without sigining out. in that case the user's status must be set to offline when the user's session times out. please help me with this... i tried
editing to web.config file setting the session timeout to 1 minute and then invoking a method to update the database
as:
SetStatusOffline(Users.Identity.Name); in the 'Session_End' method in the global.asax file.

please help me:
i need to change the status of a logged in user to offline when the user signs out. apparently the session_onend event does not fire? what might me the cause. this is a challenge problem. anyone who solves this for me is an asp.net guru.
