Default Quick Webpage access with large data in database

hai everyone,

  i am binding patients to the drop down of the page. where i have got around 50 thousand of patients. now the problem is it takes several minutes to load in to the page. is there a better solution to come up with a less time and quicker in process.

think from user's perspective, how can one scroll thourgh 50000 items. try something like putting a starting letter of the name and get the names starting with that letter or provide a text box to type first few letters and search first/last names starting with those letters.
