Default Links that disappear

I have encountered the strangest problem... I have a list of links that I fetch from a database and put in an array and show on a page as a table. There is nothing wrong with the list on my computer and neither on some that I have checked with, but there is one user who has reported that he can't se two particular links in the table. All other links seem to work fine, and there are a lot of them! The links simply disappear and leave a blank table cell. I wanted to check if the problem still occured if I hard-coded the url, and it did. To write the url and the linktext separately (as plain text) on the other hand worked. So, does anybody know whether there are some known character(combinations) that affect the rendering of a hyperlink?! I know this may not be a specific asp.net question, but I try here anyway. The application is built with asp.net, but I don't know if the problem would still occur on a traditional asp page. I had a similar mysterious problem with a traditional asp page that is still not solved, and that was that img-tags that where linked (a href) disappeared on the client leaving the tags looking like <a href=xxx></a> instead of <a href=xxx><img src=xxx border=0></a>. This also happend to just a couple of users among many others who didn't have any problems with the links.

Anyway, in this particular case, the user has a PC, windows xp and has tried both the latest version of IE and Firefox with the same result. The code is simple and looks like this:

<td><a href="https://www04.sub.su.se/login?url=http://www.ad.se/cgi-bin/bibsam.cgi/" target=_blank>Affärsdata</a></td>

For this person it looks like this: <td></td> when viewing the source code

This link doesn't show either:

<td><a href="http://www.arkitektur.se/artikeldatabas/index.asp?adv=0" target="_blank">Arkitekturs artikeldatabas</a></td>

On the other hand, he has no problem with this link:

<td><a href="https://www04.sub.su.se/login?url=http://portal.acm.org/dl.cfm?CFID=16799488&CFTOKEN=58930878" target="_blank">ACM Digital Library</a></td>

or this link:

<td><a href="http://europa.eu.int/comm/secretariat_general/archisplus/arcp_central.cfm" target="_blank">Archis plus</a></td>

Anyone who has experienced anything similar??

This actually sounds like a syntax problem somewhere in your HTML which is causing the HREF not to render. I have never had a problem writing links out to the client in any case. What you may want to do, if possible, set up a test page that just writes out your list of links void of any formatting and then go to the users PC and navigate to that page.

This will at least verify that your array does in fact contain all the links for this user and then you can narrow it down to something within the HTML itself or the code responsible for writing the code out to the client.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I have the same problem where some links in a table or list are not being displayed on some of my users pc's.

Viewing the source code shows the table cells as empty, when there should be a link.

Did you manage to find out what was causing the problem?

Ok,

The problem appears in Firefox and Internet Explorer, so it does not appear to be browser specific.

I have uploaded a web page with just the table with the links inside the body. The result is that the missing links in the table are still missing so this must be something to do with either the table html or the actual links themselves. Can anyone please help to shed any light on what could be the problem?

Is the table cell really blank when you look at the source of the page on the offending computer?

Could there possibly be one single or double quote in the DB?

I have today ran a series of test pages, making some minor alterations to see what happened. I have to then go to another computer to see if the changes have made any difference. Nothing yet has made the missing links display.

1. I removed a class tag that was not being used for the table.
2. I removed all strong and em tags from the hyperlink description.
3. I removed some links that were using #.
4. I added a table width to the table.
5. I listed the hyperlinks only using a br tag to split each link.
6. I put the links in a ul list.
7. I removed the link description strong and em tags from the ul list.
8. I removed the # links from the ul list.

On my own pc, everything displays without a problem. On another pc (not my own) the links just disappear. If you view the source code, the html displays the table td tag or in the list it displays a br tag but no link is displayed in the source code.

I will try to look carefully at each of the links to see if there is anything in them that might cause them not to be displayed.

I just noticed, that this post is in ASP and I am using PHP, not sure if this makes a difference, but the start of this post gave the exact same problem that I am currently experiencing with my hyperlink display problem. The links are not retrieved from a database.

Does the machine where the links disappear have any client security software running?

This sounds like an issue I had in the past, where images and links were removed my anti ad / spam / privacy software....

I have found out why the links are not displaying on one particular computer, but at the moment do not have any other test computers exhibiting the same problem.

I spotted the fact that all of the links that were not displaying used the word advertisers in the url. I uploaded a test page and just replaced the word advertisers for clients and the link displayed ok.

Below is the original link.
<a href="/admin/advertisers/form-help-guide.php"><em>Forms Help (please read)</em></a>

Here is the new link that displayed ok.
<a href="/admin/clients/form-help-guide.php"><em>Forms Help (please read)</em></a>

I still do not know why the link with the word advertisers in the url would not display. The problem computer was running Norton Antivirus, but when I disabled it the link still would not display.

Yeah, I had something similar with images that came from an Ads folder, or had a specific size. I believe it's Norton Privacy or another ad blocker that's responsible for this.

Cheers,
