[RESOLVED] Remote Debugging Issue

Hello Everyone,
I have been having some problems getting the Remote Debugging Components working with Visual Studio 2003 so hopefull someone will be able to help me here.

My Development machine is XP Pro SP2 and the Web Server that I am trying to debug on is a Windows Sever 2000 SP4 (It is also used as a Secondary Domain Controller)

I installed the the Remote Debugging Components onto the Server from the Visual Studio discs without a problem and had to tweak some things after I installed the Components per a KB article. I go into Visual Studio on my machine and hit F5 and I recieve the error:

"Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. The debugger component on the server failed to connect to the local machine."

Some of the Articles pointed at this being a security issue and the user trying to debug needed to be part of the Debuggers Group so I added myself to that group, albeit I am part of the Administrators group on that machine. This did not resolve anything.

Another KB article (though it was more about Server 2003 then 2000) said that DCOM Settings needed to be edited and tried that to no avail.

So I am somewhat at a loss here as I can't seem to find a resolution to my problem, does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be?

This particular error is a bit troublesome to fix as the MSDN has no documents that directly relate to the resolution of this issue. (A fix does exist on the MSDN for this problem, albeit, it is associated with another error message)

In XP SP2, Microsoft tightened up the security of the OS and a bunch of things need to be changed for remote debugging to work. First and foremost, I assume that the PC you are debugging from (e.g. Visual Studio is installed) is WinXP Pro SP2 and the Web App is hosted on Win2K Server.

To resolve this issue, you need to first download the exe named debuggerfirewallconfiguration.exe from the MSDN. This will open a bunch of ports in the Windows firewall that VS uses to communicate with the Remote Server.

Next go to a command prompt on your XP machine and type: dcomcnfg This will open up the DCOM Configuration for your machine. Expand Component Services then Computers finally highlight the 'My Computer' Icon. In the tool bar across the top, click the button that looks like a computer and a window will appear. Goto the COM Security Tab and then under Access Permissions click 'Edit Limits'. Highlight the Anonymous Logon and click the check box at the bottom that correlates to Allowing remote access.

Restart your PC and you should now be able to debug your apps on your remote server!
