Default The Book!

I have recently updated my Visual Studio 6 to .NET and purchased this book over the internet before publication. Unfortunately the code used is for Web Matrix and doesn't work with Visual Studio.NET does anyone know of a source for equivalent code?

Hi Edward,

AFAIK, there is not a separate version of the code for VS.NET. After all, if the book focuses on the Web Matrix, why bother with a VS.NET version? However, things are not that different between the two programs.

As far as I can see it, you have two options: either download the Web Matrix (for free from www.asp.net) or use the code in Visual Studio. You may need to change things here and there (VS.NET uses Code Behind by default, while the Web Matrix uses in-line code) but in general you'll find that the code itself will work without too many modifications.

Cheers,

Imar

Thanks to both melvik & Imar, I downloaded the code from www.wrox.com/dynamic/books/download.aspx at the same time as posting my topic, the code is OK it appears that the dataset has not been updated with changes to the table for use as an argument of the dataAdapter.update method. See my new topic.
Many thanks for commenting on this topic.
Edward.

Hi Imar, am I impressed with the speed of your response! wow.
Thanks for the explicit instructions in your website, I have followed these but unfortunately the problem persists.
The whole business of security using XP Professional is a problem, when downloading the security patch from MS I tested my Firewall and MS Site reported that it was not fully functional ( I guess because of some changes I had made to allow files to be moved over a LAN connection, this was not connected to the web) I allowed the MS site to make the Firewall secure and noted changes to my earlier settings.
Will making the database visible to the ASP.NET1.1 web application change my Firewall settings? I probably have to find out what the MS setting adjustments have changed from the original Firewall settings but am not that familiar with this aspect of XP.
Any advice?
Many thanks,
Edward.

Hi Edward,

What exactly did you change in the security settings? What folder did you change and to what account did you grant permissions?

Although a firewall can block access to the entire Web site, I find it hard to believe that it will only block updates to databases (although anything is possible of course). Did you try disabling the firewall for a short period and see if that fixed the problem?

Personally, I think the problem is still related to security settings, but you could try to stop the firewall. To do so, open your Lan connection (In Control Panel | Network Connections), right-click it and choose Properties. On the Advanced tab you'll see the settings for your firewall.

HtH,

Imar

Hi Imar, thanks for your reply re my security problem accessing the database, I prepared a Word doc with screen dumps showing initially what settings/account references that I have changed but could not reply to your email at [email protected] for obvious reasons.
I have followed the instructions in your website 'How do I Fix ASP 80004005 errors' page with the equivalent details to suite my computer, then when I didn't get the desired result went on to apply it to anything remotely connected to this problem. I would send the attachment if you could supply an email address.
I would not abuse the privilage but would like to keep my computer settings to a limited audience.
regards,
Edward.

Hi Edward,

The donotreply address isn't mine; it belongs to Wrox who sends you a copy of each message posted in a thread or forum you're tracking.

To send me an e-mail, click on Members in the left nav of the P2P site and then click my name. From the profile page, you have the opportunity to send an e-mail to me, so I can respond to that.

Cheers,

Imar
