Default Exchange or Custom Solution?

Hello Everyone and thanks for your help in advance. This is somewhat of a development question, but also somewhat philosophical. I am in need of developing an Intranet for a smallish (30 employees & workstations) medical office. One of the needed applications is some type of contact manager. This contacts databse would need to be accessible from a number of mobile devices as well a regular PC's. There will need to be a number of automated applications including emailling the contacts on birthdays and anniversaries. Integration with Office programs is also a must. I have limited experience with Exchange and am trying to decide whether a custom database using SQL Server and ASP.Net is better suited for this application. I am also concerned that, from previous experience with Outlook/Exchange environments, that giving the users too many options, such as Public vs. Private contacts and folders often defeats the purpose of simplifying the process and making the database accessible to everyone. However, I know the newest Exchange product is a wonderful application. I would be interested in feedback from others as to what my best approach is. Any input on this topic is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you are talking about using Outlook Web Access, then yes, the latest version of it seems to be far superior than it's predecessors especially when used with IE5.01 or higher. I have wrangled with this issue myself and couldn't persuade the higher ups to fork over the cash.

If money isn't an problem, then I would say go for it. Remember, though, that not only do you pay for the Exchange server license but the client access licenses X 30. Also, if you don't currently have Windows 2000 Server you will need to add that to the price.

Can you get the same functionality as a custom solution. How hard is it to program?
