I've given up on the access route ... but when I do your if authenticated statment .... it picks up my windows username and doesn't verify that I am logged in to the website. Help!

It shouldn't do that with forms authentication. Are you sure you have a correct <authentication> element with the mode attribute set to Forms in your web.config file?
