All:

I have written a web service with many web methods to manipulate a database on a remote server database. I would like to make the methods and database available to selected developers for programs for which the database could be useful. But on the other hand I do not want to open the database up to the world.

Can anyone suggest something for me to read (US English) to help me build in some web service security while still allowing certain apps to gain full access? Thanks. VV

Have I posed an elementary question and no one feels an answer is worth their time?
Surely someone has dealt with this question before. I am new to writing web services.
I was hoping that there were lots of people visiting this site who already have dealt with employing a bit of security at a webserver/web services site.

Or is no one interested in this topic?

Or does no one have any suggestion at all? Or maybe there is no way to employ some kind of security to protect a database behind a web service.

I could go look in books dealing with encryption techniques and implement my own
security scheme -- from scratch, but I'm hoping not to have to re-invent the wheel here.

Anyone?
