Customizing page menu based on user credentials

Hi,

I want to customize the default/ home page based on the user role ( as i have several levels of users).And I want certain menu and sub menus to be displayed based on user role, instead of displaying all the sub menus and letting the user find out whether he/she has permission to access the page....Can i Do this using XML...If yes, how?
