Ahah thats now firing all the validations, I set StepNavigation to Template and it was set with: ValidationGroup="RegisterUser" which I changed to CreateUserWizard1 but this stops the validation already there on username / password so I changed all other validation controls to RegisterUser.

This brings up the * by the field but doesnt show the error message in he literal at the bottom but this will be ok.

Appreciate you baring with me on this, I have other questions but I think this thread is exhausted! Thanks for your help.

You can remove all the asterisks from the validators. This will force the controls to use the Error Mesage instead....
