How best to start learning PHP or any language will depend on what you already know.

If you have experience with other programming languages, and have done some web site development, then you can probably start with a more advanced book like the Wrox Professional PHP 5 book. There are a number of ways to approach learning a new language, and I'm sure everyone has their own way. For me, I combine books, web sites, and lots of experimentation writing things that are useful to me.

Good luck and have fun!
