Default Null values

OK, I'm baffled here - been working on this for a couple of weeks now and I'm just stumped. I have this code in my Access 2003 database: AV: Nz([A/V],0). It does provide zeroes where there is a null value - however, it changes the format from numeric to text! This means that whenever I try to calculate totals based on the AV field, it merges the text-values together - so instead of getting 0+0=0, I get 00. This is quite frustrating. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
