Default Nothing works out of the box - ???

So much for instant results. I followed install instructions. Gave R/W rights to app_dev. First got one error. Then this.

Server Error in '/PhotoGallery' Application.
Failed to access IIS metabase.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Web.Hosting.HostingEnvironmentException: Failed to access IIS metabase.

Please advise

Hi there,

Can you describe a little bit more about your installation??

The error you got is often related to how you installed and configured your machine / IIS / /NET framework, and isn't really related to the applications. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd get the same error with other installations.

So, can you tell us more about the following:

1. Did you have previous versions of Visual Studio installed?
2. In what order did you install ISS and the .NET framework? (That is, which one did you install first)
3. Did you use the installer, or did you open the site from within VWD?
4. Are you using VWD or Visual Studio 2005?

The more information you provide, the better we're able to help you fix this problem.

Try this:

IIS -> Web Site -> Operators -> Add -> "ASPNET"

In documented cases of this error, it happens when both asp.net 1.1 and 2.0 are intalled on the same box. The 2.0 application failed with the metabase error until ASPNet was made an operator for the site. Afterwords, both the 1.1 applications and the 2.0 applications work fine.

Thanks,

thanks for the quick reply. I'm using Visual Studio 2005. That's the only version installed.

Could be IIS. I just installed IIS on my XP pro laptop.

I did use the installer, gave rights to the App_Data directory.

I'm not sure what to do now.

Ah, right. IIS must be installed before the framework, so the framework installation can properly configure IIS.

Here's what to do:

1. Open a command prompt and browse to

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

2. Run aspnet_regiis.exe -i

3. Open up IIS and locate your site / virtual directory. Open up the Properties dialog and switch to the ASP.NET tab. Make sure Version 2.0 is selected in the list with framework versions. Apply your changes.

4. Try again.

Does it work?

Well, now it's a different error. The other site I installed, chapter 8 seems to be working now.

Thanks again for your help. I'm a big Editors-The Back Room fan myself.

now this error.

Server Error in '/PhotoGallery' Application.
Access to the path 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Tem porary ASP.NET Files\photogallery\1ff97281\def8dcc1\hash.web' is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Yeah, it's a great album....

This error may be related to the fact that you previously had ann application pool running under 1.x, while it now runs under 2.0.

It's not as easy to resolve this under XP than it is under 2003, so maybe resetting IIS will do the trick.

Alternatively, you can take a look here: http://forums.asp.net/1109781/ShowPost.aspx and follow the steps described by JoaoMorais in the third post.

Cheers,

Imar

Well. That worked ok. I'm getting the website now but having difficulty getting to the Admin page. Now I'm getting this message. I cleared the R/Only property on the DB's. And by the way, what is the admin and superadmin passwords? How are you suppose to answer the favorite pet question? The book doesn't explain very much.

Failed to update database "C:\INETPUB\WWWROOT\PHOTOGALLERY\APP_DATA\ASPNETDB .MDF" because the database is read-only.

Did you grant read / write Permissions (right-click, Properties, Permissions tab) for the App_Data folder to the ASPNET or Network Service account? (Assuming you're using IIS, otherwise add your own account). Page 162 and further talks about this.

The Admin en SuperAdmin passwords for the Photo Album are in the book (P 217).

The *book* is called Instant Results; not the CD-ROM, so you may need to read a bit as well ;)

(Update: changed the page number)
