Ok, I followed everything I could on the book and with the download code, but the compiler won't compile !! This gives an error on various controls saying that it doesn't know what the hell 'FormatPrice' means... this is tearing me crazy

Did you try to compile the downloaded code "as is"? It normally works right out of the box. You can remove the Web Deployment project from the solution to avoid an error on that part.
