I want to change the default settings, when creating a new user, so the newsletter box is automatically set to "subscribe to HTML", while now it is set as none.

Any tips on how this can be done.
Changing the selectedvalue does not work, since the profile is created in the first screen (username/password)

You need to change the selected value in the UserProfile.ascx.

As I said in my post, this does not work.
if you use the create user wizard, the profile is already created when pressing "next".
At that moment the newsletter value is set to none, so it does not take the "selected value" into account since it gets overruled by the data coming from the database
