Yes, we're saying the same thing. The confusion started here:
Quote:
quote:I just don't even begin to understand the point Imar was trying to make here:
The problem is of course, that if you page in the database,
you only get back the relevant records for the requested page.
If you then try to sort, you only sort the current page.
This is what confuses most people at first when they page, not sort in the database. Your statement here seemed to indicate you got confused by that as well.

And yes, I agree that full sorting and paging client side would work perfectly, given that indeed the result set is "small enough"....

Well Pedant, that is one way to "parameterize" an ORDERBY clause. You say tomato, I say tomahto kind of a thing (and not really to the point of the original post. :))

The point we're all making is very simple: sort and page in the same place -- either both on the server, or both on the client. Don't page on the server and sort on the client or vice versa.

We cool?

Or maybe I was saying "love apple." <grin style="sheepish"/>

Yeah, the "crowd" I hang out with uses the term "dynamic sql" to mean using
     EXECUTE (@sqlAsString)
within a SP. Sorry!

And, yeah, we have strayed just a tad, haven't we. I wonder if poor "sandyl" is so intimidated that he/she will never come back.
