Default Help with BLL and DAL

I am using vb.net and I posted a post at http p2p.wrox.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=75216

Needing help on understanding how the BLL and DAL work. There are times when I just want to bring back a datareader, but everytime it's closed unless I create a xxxdetails.vb file ect...

I hope someone can spread some more light for me on this matter.
Thanks everyone.
