chapter1 query

Ok, i have downloaded the examples from this website directly, and was testing out my first ajax example, found in page 21 of the book. However, I found out that the example only works in IE, and display nothing in FireFox and Google Chrome. Is there a way to make it cross browser? What is my problem here?
