I believe that the version of Android that I'm using and the code in this book don't jive. I still having problems with the java "R.id...". Also I deleted a project so that I could start all over. But when I try to recreate the project a message is flagged that the project already exitst. Please what can I do.

If your problem with R.id is 'icon'. Yes the book is a little out of date use ic_launcher instead.
How did you delete the project? Use a system window and go to your workspace and see if the code still exist there. I would delete using the system delete. Then see if you can recreate it. You could always just rename the project.
