sudden localhost port issue

Hello,

So I'm rolling along in the book (now into chapter 13), and without me making any changes to VWD Express I suddenly run into a problem concerning the built in ASP.NET development server.

When I try to "View page in browser" I get the "Page not found" error (any page in any project). It seems that Visual Web Developer Express is sending the wrong port information to the browser...and it's usually off by 2 or 3 points. So, for example, the tray icon will say it's using port "50820" but the browser will try to open the page using port "50817".

I can open the page if I manually type in the correct port number from the tray icon into the browser address bar each time...but this is tedious...

OS: Windows Vista SP1

If this question is beyond the scope of this board my apologies and I will look elsewhere. I searched Google and tried various "fixes" that had no effect.

I also have this problem in Visual Studio 2008 but I only experience it in the wrox site project and not in any of my other projects that I am working on.

I would be interested to know the cause of this.

That's indeed very weird....

Does it help when you fix the port number on the Properties Grid for the Web Project in the Solution Explorer?

Hi Imar, your book is great by the way.

If I try to fix the port number in the solution explorer, I get a "port already in use error"!! And I can't seem to set a static port either.

Anyhow, I can work around this error till I finish your book to get things to work for now...than I may reinstall everything later. It's as if the port is in use (for some reason) then the web server switches to a nearby number...but close doesn't count in computers.

In searching Google, I found my exact problem on a Microsoft board posted a couple days ago (no it's not me).

but Microsoft is so far clueless...I will watch that posting to see if thy come up with an answer, but I won't hold my breath....

Can it be in use because the server is already running? Make sure there are no Web Server icons in your tray anymore before you assign the number.

Or, just assign a completely different number like 12345

OK, Sorry for the fuss.

After spending all day on this (when all I wanted to do is complete Chapter 13!) I think I solved my problem and finally found a fix that worked. There was a conflict with my NOD 32 Security (although I didn't make any changes in the settings).

Used to be you could set things up and they would remain the same in XP...Vista always seems to be chattering away at the hard drive paging files and "fixing" things for me...no thanks.
