Absolute URLs

On page 256 and 257 of your book you talk extensively or at least briefly however you want to look at it, about that using Absolute URLs to be used everywhere including references within your own site. But I have seen and have been told by very senior web developers on chat rooms on the internet, that doing such a thing can help with SEO, by making the references more open to be polled or picked up by major search engines. I have even seen in the past websites where they are doing this. Is this the reason for doing this or are there other reasons?

Also you say on page 257 of your book that the first page that a web browser is going to pick up when navigating to a domain like mydomain.com is the default.aspx or default.html? I always thought it was Index.html or Index.aspx?

Search engines support relative URLs very well, or the majority of the sites won't be indexed. They'll resolve relative links to absolute links by adding the current domain to it. You may be confused with canonical URLs which are indeed often absolute URLs and help to mark a specific location as "leading" in case you have multiple end points with the same content.
