Default Ch 19 File System Permissions

Hi Imar,

That was a nice hint to use the "Everyone" users group to determine if there are permissions issues.

With Everyone, the site runs fine. When I fall back to what I believe is the IIS service, I have some problems. The problems didn't seem entirely consistent. A few specific issues are listed below. (The previous configuration still applies: a VM running Server 2012 w/ IIS 8 and SQLExpress.

One problem I had was the "Group or user names" account. I didn't find the book's suggestion of "IIS AppPool", but my system had "IIS_IUSRS", so I used that. Still, without "Everyone" also used, I noticed the following:

1 - A few times the .css files weren't applied.
2 - I also had a case where trying to reach the PhotoAlbums page from the top menu bar link wouldn't load (401.3 - I noticed the URL didn't include "../default.aspx" after it in that case); but using the dropdown menu item to reach PhotoAlbums/Default.aspx worked OK. Supposedly we should be arriving at the same page, yes?
3 - The AboutUs.aspx loads with styles applied, but the horizontal banner we added to that page somewhere around Ch 8 doesn't display - just shows a placeholder icon where the image should be.

What kind of permissions issues should I look for?

Thanks.

Best Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,

IIS AppPool should work. Are you sure you used the correct name? Which name did you end up using?

Can you define "a few times"? Are there any specific scenarios?

What do you mean with using the dropdown menu item to reach PhotoAlbums/Default.aspx?

Do you have security software or a banner blocker installed on your system or in your browser?

Cheers,

Imar

Hi Imar,

I do apologize for not answering your queries right now because I will have to get back to you on it. While I want to better understand IIS security (and others reading this thread in the future will want to 'see the answer'), in the interest of time I forged ahead with posting to my hosting service.

So here's the big news and the proof of your most excellent book.

Less than a month after I began reading, I was able to publish to my hosting service directly from Visual Studio 2013. No more website builders!

A month ago I couldn't have explained anything about ASP.NET nor what makes it any different than other ways to create websites. Yesterday I published an ASP.NET website from my desktop; albeit a humbly small website and not as fully functional as 'Planet Wrox', but an ASP.NET website none-the-less. But I knew exactly what I was doing. I'm a believer in ASP.NET. Thanks Imar. I'll read your books anytime.

For those who may read this post, I will mention that I consistently performed every single try-it-out and I think that makes a difference to the value one gets from the book.

But regarding this file security issue, l will research it and get back to you when I have better information.

Best Regards,
Alan

Hi Imar,

I successfully made it through the 1st 2 Try It Out exercises for handling exceptions and global exceptions. But in order to see my Global Exception page (OtherErrors.aspx) I forced an error in the system by commenting out the web.config system.net element (the smpt deliveryMethod stuff). This led to several findings I'd like to get your input on:
