The <link> element is not being generated in my browser source code when I view the Default file. No errors, the theme is simply not getting applied.

Can you help me help you by providing more information? For example, the chapter, page,and exercise number would help. So does posting the code for your web.config file and a description of the contents of your app_themes folder.
I had missed a step earlier to eliminate all of the code in the BasePage in the Try It Out starting on p. 210.
Ended up starting at a save .zip I had back from end of Chapter 4 and started there...moved forward and caught my error.
Whew!
