Default Beginning ASP.NET 4 Summary

Hi Imar,

I have just finished your book and wanted to commend you on an excellent piece of work which I have found to be a great introduction into the world of ASP and web development.

I would fully recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn ASP.NET and I will happily pass on that knowledge in the future. In addition to the book your active participation in your forum to help struggling developers like me was very refreshing and welcoming, knowing there was active support at the end of an email.

Well Done!

The thing that has frustrated me most throughout this whole learning curve is nothing to do with your book but the interaction and incorporation of the technologies provided by my web host provider being 123-reg. If you remember, we had the email issue a couple of months ago and at this point I still have the issue of connecting to their databases using their provided connection strings which, as yet, they have still not responded to.

Due to this frustration Imar, my final question that I would like to ask you with regards to beginning ASP is:-

Quote:
With your past experience could you recommend a web host provider, or providers, that you have used in the past which, you know, have a good reputation in hosting web sites and more importantly accommodate all the technologies that you have demonstrated in your book?
Thanks and kind regards,

Ian Ryder.

Hi Ian,

I can't recommend much as I usually don't use these hosting services. Most sites I am involved in run on dedicated servers, or on-premise at the client. I run all my own sites on a virtual private server at Orcsweb.com but it comes with a price tag.

In the past I worked with Brinkster which was OK. You could also take a look at http://www.asp.net/hosting and read the reviews to find a host that suits your needs.

Thanks Imar,

I will have a look when I get time but for the moment I have solved all my database troubles which I inadvertently caused myself! Remember that UNICODE vs ANSI problem I had a couple of weeks ago? When I was in trial and error mode I had changed the database schema from [dbo] to my hosts use name which is what I thought the host needed to work?

This was my problem since the underlying issue here was the coding on the .sql file and not the database schema. In the case of ASPNETDB it needed to use the [dbo] schema and once I realised that I retraced my steps when creating the ASPNETDB file on my host and ensured I kept the [dbo] schema. Once uploaded, all database communications began to work.

Thanks again Imar and I will no doubt chat to you once again on the Professional forum when I start that book in a week or so.

Cheers,

Ian Ryder.
