Default Advice on how to become an expert Web/Software Developer

Hello Imar,

I'm currently studying your book on Beginning ASP.NET 4 using C sharp and VB.NET 2010. I can gladly say that you did a good job simplying or demystifying the concepts in that book.

Great job sir!

Although, I am in Chapter 15 of the book, and still trying to get a full grip of all the concepts contained therein, I know that with time and constant practice, I will get a hang on it.

Now my question. I read your bio in that book and discovered that your academic background is actually in Leisure Management or something like that. I would like to know what prompted you to become a Web developer, how you mastered the concepts and the art of software development, when did you launch out into the programming career, how long did it take you to become an expert?
May I tell you that I am 28 years old, a graduate of Economics but got intrigued by what great things programmers in the world are doing, and that's how I got hooked. But up till now, though I made the switch a year ago, I still can't boast of a single app I've developed. But I strongly believe that by the time I'm through with your book, I would be able to develop web apps. I am also studying Python programming on the side. Don't know if that is a bad idea!

Please, with answers to my question above, I also need your advice on how I can become an expert in this field. I would also appreciate if I can be mentored by you.

Thank you.

Hi Tobi,

I studied Leisure Management, and did my internship at a publishing company starting out with the web (years ago). I was sold on the idea of the web, and decided to make my career out of it.

I think the best advice I can give you is read and practice. Read whatever you can on the subjects you're interested in, and build as many sites (real or demo ware) to put what you lean into practice.

Sounds easy, but it isn't.... ;-)

Cheers,

Imar
