Default Chapter 4 Repeating Table

I am using the Dreamweaver MX book with Dreamweaver MX 2004 and I'm wondering if this function has changed.

When I add a repeating table to a template I do not get the + - buttons.

I am on page 154 - 157 following along with the exercise and cannot figure out if I am doing something wrong.

Please advise. Thanks

Hi Loretta,

You're not supposed to get the + - buttons in the template, but in a page that is based on that template. The template will just create room for the repeating table, while the actual page will allow you to use the + and - buttons to insert items in that table.

If you look closely at the screenshot on page 157, you'll see it's a shot of the recipes.htm page, a page that is based on the template, and not the template itself.

Does this help?

Cheers,

Imar

Thanks for clarifying that. I have now created a repeating table it shows up on my screen as:

Repeat:RepeatRegion1 + - down arrow up arrow
EditRegion4 with a blue box.

I created one item called Public Safety hit a hard return and put on the next line SWAT.

I then saved it as a template .dwt.

I selected File, New, Template and selected the template and it gives me the following error.

Template file "C:\Documents and Settings\loretta\MyDocuments\MyWebs\so
Templates\division-template.dwt" is nested inside itself (directly or indirectly)

OK

What am I doing wrong?

I need to add 7 lines, but if I put 7 lines in the initial table it adds 7 lines when I click the + sign.

Hi Loretta,

EIther I can't reproduce the problem, or I don't understand your problem completely.

It should be possible to create a nested template like this. However, unless you add editable regions to the template after you added the items to the table, the new page based on the nested template should be mostly read-only.

Did you install the 7.01 updater for DW?
Can you post the code for the entire page: division-template.dwt

I think I was able to get it to work. I installed the update this morning. Here is the code let me know if this looks ok to you:

Other than the messy file:// links, it looks OK to me.

And hey: what's this doing in the document:

  <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
  <meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

You got me on that one. I use FrontPage too and probably opened it up in Frontpage to see how it would display.

What do you mean messy file:// links?

Well, the file:// links refer to files on your local system. This means that when you preview them in your browser, everything looks fine. However, as soon as you upload a page to the server, the file:// links will break because most of your visitors will not have this file for example:

file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/cochranlm/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/so/images/NEWsobackground.jpg

Dreamweaver adds these kind of links when you haven't saved a page or template yet. An unsaved page does not have a place in the Web hierarchy yet, so Dreamweaver cannot calculate relative links, like ../Images/MyImage. To be able to track and display the images in DW, it uses these hard codes paths. However, in your final templates and pages, these kind of links shouldn't be there anymore.

Is it on purpose that you are linking a style sheet (link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css") to a page with an .htm extension?
