Default Chapter 13 - Browser Error??

Hi Imar!

A very weird thing has happened.

I am referreing to Try it out in Chapter 13 – page 458. (events.asp).

After I finished all the steps and run the page in web browser, following error was displayed in the browser:
-----------------------------------------------

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0141'

Page Command Repeated

/thesoccersite/events.asp, line 2

The @ command can only be used once within the Active Server Page.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

When I checked the events.asp – the first two lines were as follows:

<%@LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT"%>
<%@LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" CODEPAGE="1252"%>

(I have no idea how the first line got inserted).

After I deleted the first line – the following happened:

1.There has been a DNS-ERROR for events.asp AND for all other pages in the site *in the Internet Explorer*
2.*In Netscape 7.0 and Opera* there is no DNS Error but all the pages shows blank.
3.In Netscape, I could find PopularFirstPage.asp page in the browser’s drop down list, which I had previously viewed. I clicked on it – it showed properly and from there I could take links to home.asp and mysite.asp – and even to events.asp – BUT ALL OLD VERSIONS of the pages showed. And I still cannot go to the pages directly.

I checked all the site settings – Local info, remote server, testing server – all the settings are as they should be. I have uploaded the entire site.

The PWS is running – because I can see other sites in all the browsers – for example – TheCookingPlace and the other sites which I have created. Only every page in TheSoccerSite is creating trouble.

I shut off the computer and rebooted, but still the same error occurs.

(One more thing – while carrying out the step no. 7 – on page 461 - instead of pressing Ctrl+Shift+I, I had by mistake pressed Ctrl+Shift+D. When some message appeared, I pressed cancel and then carried out all the steps correctly. Could this have caused any problem?)

I must be harassing you a lot – posting new problem every week. Sorry for the trouble.

Shubhada.

Ooops....

Ctrl+Shift+D is the short cut for Get. This will Get all the files from the Remote Server. It seems that you have overwritten all your local (newer) files with the ones from the Remote server (the old ones).

But fortunately, you do have a back up, don't you? (You *did* create a backup right?). ;)

If it's true about the Getting operation, I am afraid there is not much to do about anymore. You'll have to recreate the overwritten files.

Cheers,

Imar

Oh..! I did not create a back up!! Now, this may sound very stupid, but please tell me how am I supposed to take a back up of every file at every stage? I will be making changes to various files all the time. Should I create a *duplicate* of every file and then *put* it?

Secondly, Since I am putting files from time to time, even the versions on the remote server must be fairly new - if not latest. Then why is it showing quite old versions (in Netscape)?

Also, why does it give DNS error on Internet Explorer? It should show at least the older versions there.

Shubhada.

Well, I was actually just kidding. It *is* pretty hard to make a backup of the file at every stage all the time. One way to do this is to use a Source Control system, like Microsoft SourceSafe.
However, for learning / testing purposes this may be a bit too much.

Why oh why. You have a lot of Why questions. The only answer I can come up with is "Because you're running ASP on a unsupported platform??" ;)

But seriously, I really don't know. Did you disable friendly error messages in Internet Explorer? If you look at C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TheSoccerSite, what do you see? Are the old or the new versions of the file there? If you browse to the file and get the DNS error, what's the address of the page you're browsing to?

If I were you, I'd create a backup of C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TheSoccerSite and C:\TheSoccerSite and then delete the originals. Reboot, and then put the files in the folder back. Start with one (home.asp for example) and see if that works. It should, if you ask me.... ;)

Cheers,

Imar

In C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TheSoccerSite, the versions of the file there are the same as the ones in my local root folder.

If I browse to the file and get the DNS error, the address of the page is:

http://localhost/thesoccersite/events.asp

I will now create the back ups of the local and remote folders and do as you suggested.

Thanks for the help.

One last 'why' question...
'why' do you work on Sundays? Don't you ever take an off?

Shubhada.

Heh ;)

I could ask you the same question..... I am not really at work today, but I do read my e-mail every now and then. So I saw your message come in and decided to answer it right away. It may take a while before I'll be checking and answering again, though....
