Book: Beginning Dreamweaver MX
ISBN: 8201
Pages 28 & 29

Name: Steve Greene
OS: Windows XP Professional

Hi.

I made sure that the IIS server was installed and first tried the "local host" url. When I verified it was typed correctly, went through the troubleshooting. When I went into System and tried to manually start it there, I received the following error message:

"Could not start the World Wide Web Publishing service on the local computer."
"Error 1720: The endpoint cannot be created."

Thanks,

Steve Greene

Hi Steve,

How did you install IIS? Through the Add or Remove Programs panel of Windows? If so, did you get any error messages when installing? Did you install all the required components?

To see if IIS is installed correctly, open the Internet Information Services Manager and check your local system. There should be a Web Sites node and a Default Web Site. If they aren't there, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall IIS. You should also reboot after installation.

Other things to check are:

1. Other webservers. Does your system have any other webserver listening to port 80?
2. Firewall software blocking IIS
3. Resources. Does your system have enough resources to run IIS?

There is one Knowledge Base article I found with the error you described. It's for Windows NT 4, but the problem may apply to you as well.

Hi Michael,

If you'd want to write for Wiley, I suggest you check out http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-171.html.

It contains a lot of information for (new) authors, including addresses of people you can contact.

To be honest, I don't know. TLA's or FLA's are not necessarily a good foundation for writing, but it sure helps on the technical site.

Why not try and write some tutorials, HowTo's etc and see if you can get them published at (non) commercial sites.......
