Page 67+ Cooking Place Images Not Displaying
Oh I feel so left behind. I have just been introducted to this excellent book, having never used Dreamweaver before only to hit a hurdle straight away.
I have IIS installed on my PC (windows xp) and I have followed (to the letter) the way to set up a site C:\TheCookingPlace etc and set up a local server http://localhost/thecookingplace/index.htm but alas I am still getting the dreaded 'red cross' when trying to display my images. I am on the chapter involved with starting the pizza image in the top left hand corner. Please Help.
Apologies if this is such a beginner problem but unfortunately, that's me.
Thanks,
Paul.
:D

Hi Paul
I am also a beginner and would not be presumptions to offer technical advice but what I can tell you is that you have started on an excel book and that the back up through this forum is 2nd to none.
Mistakes I have made can be simply divided into two categories
Not reading the book carefully, missing out, i.e. not bothering to read, the explanations but rushing on to the next bit of programming.
Not understanding the terms or an expression â sounds odd but true and I am a publisher of magazines.
Technically your connection to the image is dodgy. Can you double click on the icon and see it in fireworks or some other program. If you can see you have verified that you have the image. All that has to be done now is to ensure that the connection to your site is correct. You have a number of ways to do this but on would be to look in properties, Copy the link/address of the image. It is possible that the image will be outside the site, If so Dreamweaver will copy it in once you have correctly located it.
All the best

Hi Paul,
The red cross problem is probably caused by the fact that your images are available locally, but not remotely. This is a common problem for people when they start with Dreamweaver.
Whatever you create and design in Dreamweaver is only available (by default) on your local machine and folders. Even if your remote folder / server is on the same machine, it doesn't mean your files get there automagically.
To fix the image problem, switch to Local View on the Files panel and locate your Images folder. Right-click it and choose Put.
This copies the files from your local folder to the remote folder on the (remote) server.
Next, refresh your browser and the images should be there.
If not, let me know....

Hi and thanks so much for replying. Jacky you are so right, I thought I had read the book page for page but alas, lo and behold there it was, the problem staring right at me, bringing me on to Imar, thanks equally, as the information you gave me was just what I needed.
I thought registering for this forum would be a good idea and I have to say having used it only once it's worth every key stroke.:)
Thanks again,
Paul.
Oh I'm sure I'll be back soon, hopefully with something a little more taxing.

You're welcome. And please do come back whenever you have a problem with Dreamweaver or with the book; after all that's what this forum is for.
I'm glad you think the book is "excellent" ;)
Cheers,
Imar
